Contoured Holdform seat cushion on a home-office chair

How to Choose a Seat Cushion for Your Home Office

Shopping for a seat cushion for your home office? Start with how it will fit your chair and your daily routine. A product photo tells you the shape, but a few simple checks can make the choice much clearer.

1. Measure your chair before choosing a cushion

Measure the usable seat width between the armrests and the depth from the backrest to the front edge. Compare those measurements with the cushion's listed dimensions. For a cushion with an upright back section, check that there is room against your chair's existing backrest too.

Write down the measurements in inches so you can compare products consistently. If a listing uses centimeters, divide by 2.54 to convert to inches. Do not assume that a cushion described as “universal” will fit every chair.

2. Check your sitting height with the cushion in place

A cushion adds height to the seat. After placing it, adjust the chair again rather than keeping the same settings automatically. OSHA's computer workstation guidance on chairs recommends support for your feet on the floor or a footrest, with a seat depth that avoids contact behind the knees.

Check your whole desk setup while seated: can you reach your keyboard comfortably, and do the armrests still fit beneath the desk? A cushion is one part of the setup; chair and desk adjustments still matter.

3. Look closely at the cover and care instructions

For everyday use, consider how you will keep the cushion clean. Check whether the cover is removable, how it should be washed and whether it must air-dry. Read the care label before washing any part. A washable cover does not automatically mean the inner cushion can go in the washing machine.

4. Choose around your actual routine

If the cushion will stay in your home office, focus on fit and the feel you prefer. If you plan to move it between rooms, consider its size and how easy it is to carry. Buying a bundle is useful only when you already have multiple seats you want to use it on.

For use in a vehicle, first check the vehicle manufacturer's guidance and make sure any accessory preserves correct seating, seat-belt fit and access to the controls.
